Welcome to Van Zandt County |
|
 |
|
Van Zandt County provides numerous opportunities for
shopping including the experience that happens each
month at First Monday Trade Days in Canton. People
also enjoy shopping on the downtown Canton Square which
is a Texas Main Street city offering antiques, gift
shops and restaurants in historic buildings. Canton
is the county seat of Van Zandt County often called
the Free State of Van Zandt by historical accounts.
Around the county you'll see one of the most sought
after historical villages in the country in Edgewood
and a unique artists community in Edom. In Grand Saline
is the only building in the world made of salt, a tribute
to the salt mine the city sits on. The mining operations
reach a depth of 700 feet and extend over a 60 acre
area. The salt found here can supply the world's craving
for the next 20,000 years. Grand Saline is also the
birthplace of famous aviator Wiley Post. In Van you'll
hear about the community's boom town days at the Van
Oil and Historical Museum and see wells still in operation.
You'll find the community of Wills Point in the Northwest
corner of the county. Not only is Wills Point the Bluebird
Capital of Texas and the Gateway to Lake Tawakoni but
charming brick-lined streets, well-preserved historic
buildings, a variety of shops and thriving businesses,
and a rich history invite visitors to experience a
Texas small town that knows how to hold on to its roots
while spreading its wings to fly.
